Meta Andromeda explained: why creative matters more

Meta is getting better at matching adverts with people. That changes where advertisers should focus, but it does not remove the need for a strong offer, accurate tracking or real human follow-up.

What is Meta Andromeda?

Andromeda is an AI system within Meta's advertising infrastructure. It works behind the scenes. It is not a separate app to download and it is not a campaign setting to switch on.

Meta publicly explained Andromeda in December 2024 as a system for retrieving relevant ads. In everyday language, it helps create a shortlist. From tens of millions of possible adverts, the retrieval stage selects a few thousand candidates for further consideration. Other parts of Meta's advertising system help determine which ads are ultimately shown. Read Meta Engineering's Andromeda explanation.

Andromeda at a glance

It is infrastructure, not an app. It helps Meta retrieve potentially relevant adverts from a very large pool. The technology is one part of an evolving advertising system, not a single update that controls every result.

Imagine a shop assistant choosing which products to show a customer. A better assistant can consider a much larger range and produce a more relevant shortlist. The business still needs to supply products people want and explain them convincingly.

The technology continues to evolve. In October 2025, Meta reported combining retrieval and early ranking models to improve Andromeda. It is more useful to understand the direction of travel than to treat Andromeda as one update that changed everything overnight. See Meta's Q3 2025 prepared remarks.

What has changed for advertisers?

A familiar approach was to divide potential customers into many small audiences, each with a separate budget and slightly different ads. There are still good reasons to separate audiences, but increasingly capable automated delivery gives us a reason to question whether every division is helping.

Our practical interpretation is that businesses should invest in useful creative choices while testing how much manual audience restriction they actually need. This is a strategic recommendation, not a guarantee that broad targeting wins every time.

The better question is: are we giving the advertising system enough compelling reasons for different people to care?

What does creative actually mean?

Creative is everything a person encounters in your advert: the image or video, opening line, words, speaker, offer and invitation to take the next step. It includes how you present the problem and what evidence you provide.

"Creative does the targeting" is a useful shorthand, but it should not be taken literally. Your message helps determine who finds an advert relevant. It does not guarantee who sees it or replace audience controls.

Creative diversity means different ideas

Changing a background colour or swapping a few words may improve an advert. It does not necessarily give someone a new reason to buy.

Build variety across both the message and its presentation. Test a demonstration, an honest customer story, a founder explanation, a frequently asked question and a clear offer. Keep the brand recognisable while allowing each advert to do a useful job.

Formats matter too. An image can communicate a simple offer quickly. A carousel can explain several steps. A video can demonstrate a service or help someone get to know the person behind it. For Reels, Meta recommends vertical video, audio and keeping essential messages inside the safe area. Read Meta's Reels advertising guidance.

There is no universal requirement to produce dozens of new adverts every week. The sensible volume depends on budget, audience, production resources and the ability to learn from results. More content only helps when it adds something worth testing.

What are creative iterations?

An iteration is a deliberate improvement to an existing idea. If a first-class walkthrough generates useful enquiries, the next version might answer a common question sooner or explain the booking process more clearly. That differs from an entirely new concept, such as a member testimonial.

  1. Identify a customer question, motivation or hesitation.
  2. Create an advert that addresses it clearly.
  3. Measure the quality of resulting enquiries and sales.
  4. Improve the promising idea or test a different explanation.
  5. Keep learning from what customers actually say.

Avoid declaring a winner after a handful of clicks. Ads running together may receive different amounts of delivery, so ordinary campaign results do not automatically provide a controlled comparison.

Why restrictive ad sets deserve a rethink

An ad set is a group of ads sharing delivery settings, such as audience and optimisation choices. Splitting a modest budget across many small ad sets can leave each with too little money or evidence to work with.

Give every restriction and separate ad set a clear business reason. A local studio still needs an appropriate service area. Different countries, languages, offers or commercial objectives may justify separation. A guess about which hobbies a future customer has deserves testing rather than automatic acceptance.

Broader delivery should remain accountable to lead quality, sales and cost. It is a testable strategy, not an instruction to surrender judgement.

Is retargeting still important?

Retargeting can still have a purpose. Someone considering an expensive service may benefit from more explanation. A previous customer may respond to a relevant invitation to return. A time-sensitive promotion may need a specific audience.

What deserves questioning is the assumption that every business needs a complicated set of separate retargeting campaigns. Judge the structure by what it adds. A reported sale does not, by itself, prove that the sale would not have happened without the advert.

Why technical setup still matters

Automation still needs a clear definition of success and dependable information about what happens. Foundations include the right campaign objective, geographic settings, reliable tracking, working forms, a clear landing page and accurate records of enquiries, bookings and sales.

The Meta Pixel can report website activity, while the Conversions API provides a route for sending event data from connected systems. Where eligible and correctly configured, CRM conversion data can help Meta optimise towards leads more likely to progress. See Meta's lead generation guide.

A form submission and a paying customer are different outcomes. If your reporting treats them as interchangeable, you cannot properly judge which adverts are helping the business.

£200 acquisition cost

20 enquiries at £10 each. One becomes a customer.

£50 acquisition cost

10 enquiries at £15 each. Three become customers.

The more expensive enquiry produced the better business result in this hypothetical example, before considering other costs and customer value.

Automation makes human follow-up more valuable

Generating an enquiry starts a conversation. It does not finish the sale.

1. Relevant advertA clear message earns attention.
2. EnquiryThe person asks for information.
3. Instant acknowledgementAutomation responds and routes the lead.
4. Human conversationA person listens, reassures and handles individual needs.
5. Booking or saleThe right next step is agreed.
6. Recorded outcomeThe CRM keeps the result visible.
Automation keeps the journey moving. People build trust and handle the individual conversation.

Automation can acknowledge an enquiry immediately, offer appointment times, send reminders and keep routine tasks moving. It can prevent a promising lead from being forgotten.

Our position is permanent: human follow-up remains part of the sales process. People still need reassurance, context and someone who can understand their circumstances. Let automation handle repetitive administration so your team can spend more time listening, answering questions and building trust.

A connected CRM and lead management service helps the team see where each person is, what has been discussed and what must happen next. Customer questions can then inform the next advert or creative concept.

What should business owners do now?

  • Review the entire journey from advert to paying customer.
  • Create meaningfully different reasons for people to respond.
  • Give every campaign restriction a commercial purpose.
  • Track bookings and sales, not only cheap enquiries.
  • Make one person responsible for human follow-up.
  • Use recurring customer questions to guide the next creative idea.

Andromeda gives businesses a reason to rethink how they work with Meta's advertising technology. Customer understanding, a worthwhile offer, clear communication and personal service remain the foundations.

Frequently asked questions

Is Andromeda an app?

No. It is part of Meta's advertising infrastructure and operates behind the scenes.

Does Andromeda mean targeting no longer matters?

No. Audience boundaries and business requirements still matter. The opportunity is to test less unnecessary restriction and invest more attention in useful creative choices.

Should I stop retargeting?

There is no universal reason to stop. Review its purpose and contribution to business results before changing a working strategy.

How many creatives do I need?

Enough to test meaningful differences at a pace your budget can support. There is no single number that suits every business.

Can automation replace all lead follow-up?

Automation can handle many routine steps. Smash Agency recommends keeping people responsible for the relationship and available for conversations requiring judgement, reassurance or individual attention.
